CMMC Level 2 preparation
Prepare to explain how the work is done.
Preparation for a CMMC Level 2 assessment begins with a usable understanding of the relevant contract, systems, information, people, providers, safeguards, evidence, and accountable decisions. The goal is not to make the organization look ready. It is to make the current state understandable, testable, and governable.
A practical preparation sequence
Confirm the requirement and boundary
Start with the current contractual requirement and the actual information and systems used to perform the work. Document what is in scope, why, and what remains outside the stated boundary.
Reconcile people and responsibilities
Identify the accountable official, system owners, security roles, administrators, process owners, internal teams, and external providers. Resolve shared responsibilities in writing before they become assessment-day questions.
Validate implementation against operations
Compare the policy, procedure, configuration, and operating record. Where they differ, record the condition rather than explaining it away. A useful readiness plan separates confirmed facts, gaps, assumptions, and remediation decisions.
Organize evidence around the work
Prepare records that help show how relevant activities operate over time, not only selected point-in-time artifacts. Include the limitation and change history needed to interpret each record accurately.
Rehearse the explanation
The people closest to the system, process, and evidence should be able to explain the boundary, activity, owner, record, and known limitation in a consistent way. Rehearsal is not scripting. It is testing whether the organization understands its own operating model.
Establish the next review
Readiness can change when the contract, scope, people, systems, suppliers, evidence, or risk decisions change. Define how material changes are evaluated and who is accountable for the next review.
What not to assume
Do not assume that a tool, policy, prior score, provider statement, or preexisting document set proves the complete current state. Each may help. Each still needs to be connected to the applicable requirement, boundary, operation, and evidence.
eTrepid’s role
Within an agreed scope, eTrepid can help coordinate readiness activities, support implementation and operating discipline, organize evidence needs, and prepare a practical sequence of next actions. The client remains responsible for its scope, facts, policies, representations, decisions, risk acceptance, and performance. eTrepid does not issue CMMC certification or guarantee an assessment result.
Sources and limits
This candidate will be checked against the current DoD CMMC Level 2 scoping and assessment guidance before release. It is general preparation guidance, not legal advice, certification advice, or an assessment conclusion.
